Live-edge Slab Flattening

20 years ago, I had the good fortune to tour George Nakashima’s workshop in Pennsylvania. As one of the most highly revered woodworkers in the world, he built furniture that often included natural features of the tree as design elements. In many of his tables, this approach preserved the natural edge of the board. By simply removing the bark, Nakashima allowed the bare contours of the tree’s vertical silhouette to serve as the table’s shape.

To this day, the “live-edge” table remains a popular and enduring style of furniture. The CNC router is an essential tool for modern construction of live-edge furniture, as it allows for fast, precise flattening of large slabs. Beeline can take your slab, regardless of whether it is warped, cupped, bowed or twisted, and turn it into a smooth and perfectly flat surface. We can even complete the preparation with sanding and varnishing so all you’ll need to do is add a base or legs!
